Thyroid in Pregnancy
गर्भावस्था में थायरॉइड
Thyroid problems are common in Indian women, and pregnancy changes the rules. OVERT hypothyroidism genuinely needs treatment and the dose usually has to go UP early in pregnancy. But for SUBCLINICAL hypothyroidism — mildly raised TSH with a normal T4 — the best evidence is surprising: large randomised trials found that treating it did NOT improve children's IQ or pregnancy outcomes. That matters, because a great many Indian women are started on lifelong thyroid tablets for a borderline number.
When to see a doctor
- TURANT DOCTOR — Dil bahut tez dhadakna, tez bukhaar, bahut ghabrahat/confusion (thyroid storm durlabh par jaanleva hai)
- AAJ DOCTOR KO BATAO — Pregnancy confirm hui hai aur aap pehle se thyroid ki dawa le rahi hain (dose aksar turant badhani padti hai — intezaar mat karo)
- DOCTOR KO DIKHAO — Delivery ke 3-6 mahine baad bahut thakan, wazan/mood ki gadbadi, ya baal jhadna (postpartum thyroiditis ho sakta hai — TSH karwao)
- DOCTOR SE POOCHHO — TSH bas thoda sa badha hai aur FT4 normal hai (subclinical) — "kya dawa zaroori hai ya nazar rakhein?" (par khud se dawa band mat karo)
